Fill a man with enough beer and he’ll follow you anywhere. Fulfill his desire to belong and he’ll surrender his soul. Brecht’s Man=Man tells the tale of a peaceable porter transformed by a gang of soldiers into a ruthless killing machine. This grotesque farce confronts pressing questions of personal accountability and the value of individuality: is one man as good as any other? At what cost do we betray our identity? When is the surrender of principle to the will of the powerful merely an excuse for indulging our darkest appetites? Inspired by my love of silent cinema, clown, and song, I want this production of Man=Man to make you laugh – till it hurts.
