Lecturer in Acting


Peter Francis James is presently performing in The Merchant of Venice on Broadway. He appeared in The Lady From Dubuque with Dame Maggie Smith (London — Theatre Royal Haymarket) and as Colin Powell in Stuff Happens, at The Public Theater (OBIE, Lucille Lortel, and Drama Desk Awards). Other theater credits include: On Golden Pond, Drowning Crow (Broadway), August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean (Mark Taper Forum, L.A.), Judgment at Nuremberg (Broadway), House of Flowers (Encores!), Suzan-Lori Park's Venus (Public & Yale Rep), Claire in The Maids (OBIE Award - CSC), Scent of the Roses with Julie Harris, Jean in Miss Julie (McCarter), and A.R. Gurney's Buffalo Gal (Williamstown). He has performed many roles in Shakespeare including: Othello in Othello (Baltimore Center Stage), Oberon in Sir Peter Hall’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Ahmanson), Coriolanus in Coriolanus (McCarter), Don Pedro in Much Ado About Nothing (Central Park), and Pisanio in Cymbeline (RSC and TFANA).

Film and television credits include: The Messenger, The Losers, The Rebound, Jahfree Neema in Oz, Kings, Raymond Parks in The Rosa Parks Story with Angela Bassett, Joe Gould’s Secret, The Wedding (mini-series), Montana, The Ruby Bridges Story, Law and Order, Law and Order: SVU, Third Watch, and Thurgood Marshall in Simple Justice.

Mr. James has taught at Yale School of Drama since 2000. He has also taught at BADA at Oxford, The Actors Center, The Public Shakespeare Lab, Fordham University and Barnard. He is a graduate, and an associate, of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London.
